Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. The aunt was on during the night shifts as a nursing assistant so she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater in the daytime. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially conscious and taught her to use the arts as a means to express herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights Movement's historic march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by the summers she spent in Selma and decided to make a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay was in college when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage of the home of a juror. As a result of her work she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the business of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right after she graduated from school. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency.
